How Much Space Do I Need for an Outdoor Sauna?

A lot of people assume they need a huge backyard to fit a sauna. That’s usually not the case. Families all over New Zealand are enjoying the benefits of at-home saunas. Most setups don’t take up as much room as you’d think. The real question is how many people you want to fit inside and how you plan to use it.
Quick Overview
● 1–2 people outdoor saunas: work in smaller spaces, easy to fit into a corner
● 3–4 people outdoor saunas: need a bit more room, good for regular use
● 5+ people outdoor saunas: better for larger yards or dedicated outdoor areas
● Leave extra space around the sauna for airflow and access
● Always plan for a flat, solid base
How Many People Will Use the Sauna?
Size mostly comes down to capacity. If it’s just for you or one other person, a smaller outdoor sauna is usually enough. These fit nicely into tighter spaces and don’t take over your yard.
For couples or small families, a medium size gives you more room to sit comfortably without feeling cramped. Larger models make sense if you want to share the space with friends or create a more social setup. They do need more room, so be sure your yard has enough space before you shop.
Small Outdoor Saunas (1–2 People)
Small outdoor saunas, like the Alpine Niva 2-3 Person Outdoor Infrared Sauna are the easiest to place. They work well in compact backyards, patios, or even tucked into a corner. You don’t need much space to make them work, which makes them a good option if you’re tight on room.
They’re also quick to set up and easy to fit into an existing layout without changing much.

Medium Outdoor Saunas (3–4 People)
Medium outdoor saunas like the Alpine Lucca 3 Person Outdoor Traditional Finnish Sauna, the Vista Mini 4 Person Outdoor Traditional Finnish Sauna or the Infrared Barrel 4 Person Outdoor Infrared Sauna give you a bit more flexibility. You’ll need more space compared to a smaller model, but it’s still manageable for most backyards. These are a popular choice because they balance size and comfort. You get enough room to stretch out without needing a huge footprint.

Large Outdoor Saunas (5+ People)
Large outdoor saunas like the Alpine Cabin Sauna for 4-6 People or the Wood-fired Vista XL 6-8 Person Outdoor Traditional Finnish Sauna need a bit more planning. They’re best suited for bigger yards or areas where you’re creating a dedicated outdoor setup. If you like the idea of using your sauna with friends or family, the extra space can be worth it.
Just make sure you’ve got enough room not only for the sauna itself, but also for access around it.

Don’t Forget the Extra Space Around It
The sauna isn’t the only thing to think about. Leave some space around it. You want to be able to move around to get in and out without having to squeeze. Don’t forget to plan for the door, too. You’ll have to be able to fully open it. Even a little breathing room makes the setup feel better. Or maybe you want to add an Ice Bath to start your hot-cold therapy wellness program.

Tip: It also helps with cleaning and general upkeep.
Plan for a Solid Base
A stable surface is just as important as the size. Concrete, pavers, or a strong deck all work well. These keep your sauna level and help it last longer.
